For round 15 of the SCCA Southeast Area Road Race of Champions (SARRC) Regional race of 2005, RSM team driver Jeff Snell traveled to Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, SC. Snell qualified second quick in Sunday mornings session amongst three cars in class with a 1:40.899 behind Tilden Kinlaw's 1:40:694. Snell gridded on the inside with high expectations for a good race for first..

At the start approaching turn one, Tilden Kinlaw in FSC 53 who qualified first quick and was gridded one row ahead on the outside of Snell began moving track left to maintain his position. Driver of FC car 97, stating that to prevent contact to the rear of the fastest car in group through turn one locked up his tires. After lockup, driver 97 turned driver left and lost control of his car hitting Tilden Kinlaw in the right rear corner with his right front corner. 97 continued moving track left at a 90 degree angle to track direction blocking Snell's path. Snell then hit 97 with his front right to 97's front left. The driver CFC 11 then contacted Snell from behind in the right rear simultaneously contacting car 97 in the left rear.

In total six cars were involved with significant damage, none being able to continue. Two protests were filed with the Steward of the Meet (SOM) by drivers Jeff Snell and Tilden Kinlaw. Multiple witness statements were taken and in car and tower video reviewed. The SOM ruled that the protests were in good faith and well founded. It was the opinion of the SOM that the available witness testimony and video could not substantiate probation, a license suspension or revocation. As a result both Snell and Tilden's protest fees were returned and the driver of 97 was counseled.

Drivers determined to be in violation of GCR section 9.1.1 A,B,C,D face penalties ranging from verbal reprimand to permanent suspension of their SCCA competition license . Video of the incident was retained by the SOM until the expiration of the 10 day appeal window. Neither Snell nor Kinlaw intend on appealing the decision of the SOM.

Repairs to chassis 37 will be completed and competition events placed back on the calendar as soon as practical.

Snell earned no points for his effort.

Snell then began to battle back to challenge for P1.

Working Lap 15 with 1 to go Snell was navigating turn 6 on the racing line, (a right hand equal radius slightly off camber section) when he was contacted by Hannu Nummenpaa of the Florida Region from the right rear making wheel to wheel and wheel to body contact causing a clockwise spin, eventually stopping 1/3 off track pointed generally in race direction. From P2 position Snell lost P3 and P4 finishing P5 as a result. The offending driver lost the opportunity for P3 finishing P6 and did not accept responsibility for the offending maneuver.

2.27.05 RS Motorsport takes 2nd and 3rd Place finishes at the February 2005 SARRC/ECR/Pro-IT

Qualifying 1st and 2nd in class respectively Snell gridded on the outside spun, apparently caused by unbalanced brake bias settings, on the back straight on the warm-up lap moving to the back of the grid. Reed also spun on the second warm-up lap on the downhill to the front straight, but was able to collect the car dropping only a few positions. Snell and Reed were hopeful that the track would dry over the course of the event, but increasing rain prevented any improvement in track conditions.

RS Motorsport decided to run slicks with the forecasted rain having held off all day. Approximate race time 2:30EST) While preparing to grid a light intermittent sprinkle began. When the track went hot the track was wet, but not yet requiring rains. By lap three the course was receiving considerable rain and those competitors electing rain tires rapidly moved to the front. Jesse Reed successfully held off the third in class qualifier on rains until the final lap.

Both Snell and Reed encountered additional single car on track spins that resulted in no damage. The next event will be held at Virginia International Raceway on the full-course, Reed and Snell's home track.
